Family immigration

If you have a close relative with legal status in the United States, you may be able to begin an immigration application process. A close relative is your:

  • Spouse who is a United States citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

  • Adult child (age 21 or older) who is a United States citizen

  • Parent who is a United States citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

  • Sibling who is a United States citizen

Humanitarian immigration

If you have no close relatives with legal status in the United States who can help you, other forms of immigration relief may be available to you, such as:

  • Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

  • The U Visa for victims of violent crime

  • The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petition for abused spouses of citizens and Legal Permanent Residents

  • The asylum process for people who have arrived in the United States less than one year ago
